Write For the Newsletter
Hello Heartland writers! You are invited to write a short article for the Heartland Newsletter!
TOPIC: You can choose to write about anything you want! There are some ideas below.
LENGTH: 100 -250 words (up to 300 words may be considered).
TITLE: Remember to have a title for your article.
PICTURES: If you have a photo that you have personally taken, please send it with your article.
PROCESS:
- Choose a topic! Research any information you need.
- Type out your article and print it.
- Ask a teacher to check your writing for errors.
- E-mail the edited article to Jasmin: jasmin@heartlandenglish.com
- Type your article in the email or send as a Word file
- Your article should have NO mistakes!
- Punctuation: 2 spaces after a period/comma, and no spaces before a period/comma
- Attach pictures to your e-mail

What
inspires you? Write about art,
music, or stories that you love.
2.
Your
Heartland experience.
Talk about your experience at Heartland or in your homestay!
3.
Write
about a moment in your life you will never forget.
4.
Write
about a fork in the road in your life, and how you made the decision to go the
direction you did.
5.
Share
your interesting hobby.
6.
Write a
letter to your younger self.
7.
How to
deal with homesickness. Help students who miss their friends
and family back home.
8.
What is
special about your home country or hometown?
This
can include superstitions, festivals, history, or holiday traditions.
9.
Compare
and contrast the traditions or customs between your country and Canada.
10.
Write
about a time you were a fish out of water.
11.
Advice
column. Give us some life tips! Your new classmates may need help to solve
problems at home or at school. You might
know the answer!
12. Answer a frequently asked question (FAQ). Answer a question about yourself or your
country that everyone always asks you.
This could be an opportunity to correct any common misconceptions about
your country.
13.
Interviews
& profiles. Interview people in
your life or at school and share their thoughts with your readers. Help put a name and a face to your friends at
Heartland. Get to know your favourite
teacher or staff member!
14.
Why do
you love Winnipeg? Imagine
writing to someone who has never visited Canada before.
15.
Review a
place you have visited in Winnipeg. Tell us about your favourite
restaurant, art exhibition, local event or show!
16.
Choose a
strong emotion. Write about a memory
associated with that emotion.
17. Recipes. Share a traditional family recipe, a
simple dish you learned, or a dish to cater to a dietary restriction (vegan or
gluten-free recipes).
18. Write poetry!
19. Book or movie reviews.
20. Exercise
and fitness.
21. Teach your audience about
language. Teach us how to say easy
phrases like “Hello!” or “How are you?” in your language. Share your study tips for
learning English!
22.
Statistics. Publish some statistics, charts, or graphs
that you think readers will find interesting.
Surveys, polls,
feedback. Ask your classmates
what they want and what they like.
23. Other topics: Science,
technology, food, sports, sports teams, parenthood, music, or something interesting
that you discussed in class!
